In a capitalist economy, a character mask Charaktermaske is the functional role with which a man or a woman relates and is related to in a society composed of stratified social classesespecially in relationships and market-exchange transactions; thus, in the course of buying and selling, the commodities goods and services usually appear other than they are, because they are masked obscured by the role-playing of the buyer and the seller. We now turn to its form. Bailey accuse Ricardo of converting exchange value from something relative into something absolute. This is used to display charts and graphs on articles and the author center. Both are actually only vectors — determinations conditioned reciprocally by each other — of the same relative value-expression, but divided like poles between the two commodity-extremes which have been set equal.
All that these things now tell us is, that human labour power has been expended in their production, that human labour is embodied in them.
Marx: A Summary of “The Fetishism of Commodities”
By relating itself to itself as value, it distinguishes itself from itself as use-value, at the same time. Commodities in which equally large labour-quanta are contained, or which can be produced within the same labour-time for that reason have the same quantity of value. This precursor is what Marx calls "class consciousness", where real social relations and agency are born. The value of the linen being given in magnitude, that proportion depends on the value of the coat. Or a more immediate example, in every factory labour is systematically divided, but this division is not thereby mediated by the fact that the workers exchange their individual products.
